Another Orkney Week is Done

Joshua returned from marching band camp at Orkney Springs, VA this afternoon. Everybody had a great time and the band's show is coming together very nicely.

Yesterday was Family Day. One of the fun events is when the marching band students teach their parents and siblings a little bit about marching, then try to guide through part of their drill. It's pretty funny to watch. It was a good time to be on photography duty! This event is followed by a parade. After the parade, the marching band returns to the field and runs through their show.

This year's show is about baseball. The music is taken from "A League of Their Own" and "The Natural." The entrance onto and exit from the field are inspired by "Field of Dreams." It's a good show. The music is good and the drill is lively. Most importantly, the students and teachers are psyched. Everyone really likes this show.

After the run-through, everybody eats supper. Then the students change into their concert clothes and finish the evening with a concert band performance. All in all, it's a great time for students, siblings, parents and teachers.

The photo below shows the 146 students who attended Orkney. Only 5 or 6 students were unable to go.

The next photo shows the trombone section. Joshua and Stephanie, the two section leaders, are on the step in front of the others.

The final photo shows the trombones marching in the Saturday afternoon parade.

Wow! That's a huge band. I'll bet they sound great. That's one thing I could never put together, playing and marching at the same time.

What a wonderful group to be part of at this age. The discipline, the teamwork, the skill both physically and musically come together to make this amazing presentation. I wish I could have been part of something like that.
Good for Joshua!! I am so proud of him!
